1. Question:
Is there a fee for camping on the Island?
Answer:
No
2. Question: How do I reserve a camping site?
Answer:
You do not reserve a campsite on the Island;
But you must register with the Resident Ranger on the Island
before you come, by calling (727) 638-4447
3. Question: Where are the campsites on the Island?
Answer: This is a primitive
island
experience and you can camp where ever you like on the northern
part of the Island. (see aerial maps.) Campsites are not marked
& are on a first come first serve basis.
4. Question: How do I get to the Island?
Answer:
The island is only accessible
by boat. It sits just 3 miles off the coast from Tarpon Springs,
Florida.
5. Question: Where do I anchor my boat?
Answer:
You must anchor your boat
off the beach shore either on the west gulf side or the northern
tip of the Island.
Be sure to use 2 good size Anchors.
6. Question: What wildlife is on the Island?
Answer:
There are raccoons,
armadillos, possums, skunk, gopher tortoises, eastern-diamond back
rattle snakes, coral snakes, and a variety of non venomous
snakes.
7. Question: Are the
mosquitoes out?
Answer:
The mosquitoes and
no-seeums are generally out in the summer months, depends on the
time of day and if there is a nice breeze where you are at.
Always be prepared for combat with these bugs and you will have
a good camping experience. We recommend that you have a
tent that is no-seemums Proof!
8. Question: Can I dock my boat at the south
eastern side of the Island at the dock there?
Answer:
No
9. Question: Can we see and climb up in the
Lighthouse on the southern part of the Island?
Answer:
The Lighthouse is not open to
the public to climb at their free will. It is open for tours and
climbing to the top at special events several times during the
year. Check out the calendar of events on this website for
future dates. You can walk the boardwalk from the dock
area up to the Lighthouse area and view it from behind a fenced
in area. The Lighthouse compound area will be open for regular
viewing from visitors in the near future.
10. Question: Can we have a camp fire?
Answer:
Yes, but only on
the beach. You must of course reclaim the beach back to its
natural state before you leave the Island. Which means, Douse
the burnt wood with water and return it back where you got it.
Do not cover burnt wood with sand and leave it on the beach.
11. Question: Can we bring a charcoal grill to the
island?
Answer:
No. But, you
can bring propane gas grills.
12. Question: Can we bring our dog to the Island?
Answer: No. Dogs are not
allowed on the Island of Anclote Key. They are allowed on the
North Anclote Key Sand Bar Island just north of the Main Island
of Anclote Key. You can register to camp there also.
